Design Challenge
Edify Construction is in charge of providing project and design consultation on residential construction and remodel projects, business consultation for companies in the residential re-roofing industry, and general contracting services for residential projects. The challenge was to translate what the client presented as a google/excel spreadsheet that he was using to create calculations on the totals for remodel projects, into a fully functional tablet based app system.

Process
To translate the client's Google/Excel spreadsheet into a fully functional tablet-based app system for residential construction, remodel projects, re-roofing business consultation, and general contracting services, the UI and UX design team held daily meetings with the client to understand the process and what the client needed on his platform.
Understanding the Spreadsheet: Begin by thoroughly analyzing the client's spreadsheet, focusing on the types of calculations, data inputs, and outputs it handles. Identify the core functions and how they relate to the specific needs of residential construction and remodel projects.
User Flow Mapping: Map out the user flow based on how the client currently uses the spreadsheet. This involved understanding the sequence of tasks, from entering project details to generating final calculations, ensuring a smooth transition from the spreadsheet to a digital interface.
Wireframing: Create wireframes for the tablet app, ensuring that the layout is intuitive and user-friendly. Focus on how the different sections (e.g., data entry, calculation results, project summary) will be presented on a tablet screen. The goal is to simplify complex calculations into a streamlined, easy-to-navigate interface.
Prototyping: Develop an interactive prototype that mimics the functionality of the app. This step involves incorporating features like dropdown menus, sliders, and input fields to allow users to enter data easily. The prototype enabled stakeholders to test the app’s usability and provide feedback.
UI Design: Design the user interface with a focus on clarity and ease of use. Choose colors, fonts, and icons that enhance readability and align with the brand’s identity. Ensuring that the design is optimized for tablet use, with larger touch targets and responsive elements.
Development Handoff: Collaborate with developers to ensure the design is accurately translated into a functional app. Provide detailed specifications, including interaction behaviors, transitions, and responsive layouts.
Testing and Iteration: Conduct usability testing with real users from the construction and remodeling industry to identify any pain points or areas for improvement. Gather feedback and iterate on the design to ensure the app meets the client’s needs and expectations.
